Dietary Treatment for Kidney Stones

High Acid Ash Diet

Not everyone needs dietary restrictions. Follow these diets only on recommendation of your physician.

The purpose of this diet is to provide a diet in which the total acid ash exceeds the total alkaline ash by 15-25 cc, daily, It may be used for patients who have alkaline urinary calculi (stones).

The diet is low in ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), but meets the recommended dietary allowances of the National Research Council for high quality protein, minerals, and vitamins.

General Guidelines:

Acid Producing Foods: Bread, especially Wheat, Cereals, Rice, Cheese, Crackers, Corn, Cranberries, Eggs, Lentils, Macaroni, Spaghetti, Noodles, Meat, Fish, Poultry, Pastries, Peanuts, Walnuts, Plums, Prunes, Rhubarb
Neutral Foods: Butter, Candy (Not Chocolate), Coffee, Cornstarch, Cooking Fats, Honey, Lard, Salad Oils , Sugar, Tapioca, Tea
Alkaline Producing Foods (Restrict): Almonds, Olives, Fruits, especially: Dates, Dried Apricots, Figs, Raisins, Foods Prepared with Baking Powder or Baking Soda, Milk, Molasses, Vegetables, especially:, Beet Greens, Lima and, Navy beans, Dried Peas, Parsnips, Potatoes, Spinach, and Watercress
