After your Transurethral Resetion of a Bladder Tumor or Prostate Procedure
The raw area inside your bladder/prostate will take about six weeks to heal completely. Here are some suggestions to follow during your convalescent period:
- Eat and drink what you like, but use alcohol and spicy foods in moderation. A well-rounded diet will provide the elements necessary for tissue repair.
- Keep your urine flowing freely by drinking plenty of liquids during the day (6-8 glasses), preferably before 8:00 p.m.
- Avoid straining during bowel movements. If a laxative is needed, use 2-3 tablespoons of Milk of Magnesia.
- Don't be afraid of physical activity, but be careful not to overdo it -- especially in the first two weeks. During this period, please:
NO LONG WALKS
NO LONG AUTO RIDES
NO FAST STAIR CLIMBING
KEEP DRIVING TO A MINIMUM
NO HEAVY LIFTING
NO SEXUAL INTERCOURSE
NO GOLF, TENNIS OR SIMILAR SPORTS
- If blood shows in the urine, go to bed, rest quietly and drink extra fluids. Call us if the bleeding persists or increases, or if you begin to pass clots or are unable to urinate.
- Medications that may "thin your blood" (such as Advil, Bufferin, Anacin, Excedrin, and many others) are to be avoided until the urine remains free of blood for 48 hours for TURBT and three weeks for TURP.
- Call us if you experience a fever greater than 102, especially if associated with chills.
- We provide 24 hour coverage for our patients. If any problems occur, please call us at (609) 267-6800.
